I’m going to be blunt with you. Despite it being a complete pacing disaster in regards to the movie’s overall narrative, 2020’s Monster Hunter was quite a fun flick to watch. That said, while I have played the games, I do not consider myself to be a Monster Hunter fan. I can sympathise with fans of the series who did not like the film after watching Paul W.S Anderson raped the Resident Evil Franchise violently in the bum for fourteen years right in front of me. There have been few movies in 2020 that managed to pique my interest. Yet, this little sci-fi underdog managed to catch my attention. A low budget indie film, The Vast of Night is a tense mystery movie directed by Andrew Patterson, a man who poured his life and funds into making this film. There is a level of respect one gets after watching someone’s work and knowing the amount of effort placed into it. Read the full article here…
Released in 2019 by FromSoftware, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the gaming equivalent of running a marathon after getting your leg caught in a bear trap. Directed by gaming’s favourite sadist, Miyazaki, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice takes much of its inspiration from some of the man’s previous works, mainly Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Last year was harsh, producing a slew of mediocre nonsense with the summer blockbuster disappearing entirely from the screen. However, 2020 did manage to present several excellently crafted movies in various other genres. One just needs to know where to look for them. Read the full article here…
I was never quite one for the Hitman franchise. I always found agent 47’s character to be a bit bland and the gameplay to be lackluster. While I respect 3D animation in video games, the inclusion in anime felt aesthetically wrong. Then came a show called Dorohedoro, the wacky anime adaptation of Q Hayashida’s work, where the dark whimsical setting fits the animation style like a glove. Due to the bad reputation that CGI anime has garnered, potential viewers could feel sceptical about this show. Read the full article here…
Eight years following the nerve-wracking thriller “Captain Phillips”, veteran actor Tom Hanks and writer/director Paul Greengrass team up once again, this time allowing themselves to breathe, thanks to the more sombre and lethargic nature of their latest work: News of the World. Excluding the Final Fantasy series, few franchises sparked my interest. I admit, I have not played any Persona games (also known as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona) before this one. That said, since I got the chance to jump into the cognitive palaces of 2020’s Persona 5 Royal, I have never wanted to leave. Read the full article here…
